Japanese Chin Health
The Japanese Chin's life expectancy is typically 10-12 years although some live to be 15 years of age. Health problems in the Chin are common to most toy dogs in general such as luxating patellas (slipping kneecaps), cataracts, and early-onset heart murmurs. Chins are prone to respiratory problems and have a tendency to wheeze, snort and snore. Some chins tear and may develop eye problems.
Due to their short muzzles, Chins do not respond well to heat making it necessary to shelter them from hot weather and the sun.
Reputable breeders attempt to breed away from major health defects. Reputable owners keep their Chins healthy with routine visits to a veterinarian and a commitment to the overall well-being of their Chin.
